The game was see-saw battle the entire night, through early Sunday mourning, going 18 innings setting a PNC Park record for the longest game ever played there.
The last 18 inning game fans remember seeing is the `05 Astros topping the Atlanta Braves with a walk off HR from the hands of then rookie Chris Burke sending the Braves packing home once again and the Astros to their 2nd consecutive N.L.C.S. vs. the Cardinals where they would win in 6 games, giving the franchise their first world series birth. Last nights game however had virtually no meaning to it, and its looking like it wont the way both teams look like their going as of now, with Pittsburgh being (16-33) and 16 games behind the St. Louis, and the Houston having a (25-25) record, 7.5 games behind the Cards.
The Houston loss has to hurt to team a lot after having several leads and never being able to shut the door on Pittsburgh down. Jason Bay seemed to be the man to carry his young ball club through the long night with a HR to give his Pirates a one run lead and his 5th strait game with a homer and robbing Morgan Ensburg of a homer.
A lot later on in the 17th, Willy Taveras hit a sharp single to center giving Houston a 7-6 lead, only to see Mike Gallo gave up a monster shot to Jose Castillo bring this game to another tie after the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning. Houston would leave Gallo in for the 18th, and with Bay on 2nd, they chose to intentionally walk Craig Wilson only to have Gallo throw it over the head of catcher Eric Munson. Also worth note, Gallo and Munson never could seem to match up their signs right together, Munson continually had to jog out to the mound to make sure everything was correct for the next pitch which had to be tiring considering he was playing all night long. The next batter Jose Bautista hit a short sac fly to Willy Taveras, Taveras would deliver a perfect strike to home plate only to see Munson not be able to handle it with Bay driving through him giving Pittsburgh a rare win.
The game didnt come with out any controversy though, Chris Burke was called out at home plate that would of given Houston the lead, and the winning run. However video clearly states the catcher never made the tag on Burke and a rightfully living Phil Garner would be thrown out of the game.
After the long game, both teams will square off today at 11:35 ET on short rest. Pittsburgh will then stay at home for the Brewers, and the Astros will travel to St. Louis to take on Albert Pujols and the Cardinals.

Pujols on Record Pace

Cardinals all-star first basemen Albert Pujols, leads in majors with 19 home runs already this season, and he is the fastest ever to reach 19 homers in a season in M.L.B. history. The media is starting to speculate whether or not Pujols can eclipse Barry Bonds’ 73 HR season in 2001, but before they start to compare they seriously do need to wait until the all star break.
Not only is Pujols hitting balls out of the park, but in doing so he’s bringing in runs leading the majors with 47 RBI’s, and he is 8th in the majors hitting .341 allowing his team to be in the race for a 3rd consecutive division championship with the Card’s now 1 game up on Cincinnati and 3 games ahead of Houston.
Unlike Bonds, people would admit to wanting to see Pujols break the single season HR record because the media doesn’t constantly blast him, instead to constantly praise him and put him on a higher scale then any other baseball player in the major leagues, which he does deserve, all you have to look at his numbers since he joined St. Louis in 2001.

Avg. In Bonds first at bat he was walked. In his 2nd attempt in the night, Bonds ripped the first ball he saw sending it just short of the warning track in right center field. Later in the 7th inning, everybody except for Cubs nation was waiting anxiously to see Barry go deep once again. On a 3-2 count Bonds sent the ball flying strait to center field and had tied Ruth on the all-time HR list, only to see Cubs CF Juan Pierre jump and snag the ball and for now halt Bonds place in history.
In that same inning two of Bonds teammates went deep. Randy Wynn with his 3rd HR of the year to leadoff the inning, and Lance Niekro with his 2nd of the season, but none of those runs were the type the fans, country, and media was looking for. The Giants scored 3 runs that inning using all 9 batters in the lineup, and because of the explosive 7th, it allowed Bonds to take one last crack at Ruth with a 6-1 lead.
With every pitch, flashes were going off all over AT&T Park. Again with a full count and after Bonds was robbed in his previous at bat, everybody in attendance was expecting a Bonds bomb. Unfortunately, the the fans would leave home disappointed with Bonds hitting a single to left center.
Signs appear good for him to tie Ruth with the Cubs bullpen being tired after for the next game. Once he does tie and pass Ruth, it will set him up for what we’ve been waiting for. Bonds will go “mano y mano” with Hank Aaron (755 HR’s) and will need 40 homers to tie Hammering Hank.

Bush-Whacked!!! Draft, everyone assumed Bush would go number one overall to the Houston Texans. But overtime, as we came closer and closer to draft day, speculation became louder that Houston could go with N.C. State DE Mario Williams instead.
Nobody could of possibly imagined anyone passing up on a Reggie Bush. Well, by the end of Friday night, the Texans signed Williams to a 6 year deal for $54 Million, and passed up the `05 Heisman Trophy winner.
What is Houston thinking in this move exactly? They thought Williams, who wasn’t as dominant as Bush, was a better fit for the team. Now, they’ve passed up an excellent opportunity to have possibly one of the most dynamic offence’s in the game, and Bush would of helped protect David Carr who’s been sacked 208 times in his career from being put on his rear end, again. And right now, Carr has a great excuse to be one of the most furious men in the city of Houston.
Williams does make their Defense better, but sacks and tackles isn’t going to protect Carr and put points on the board. I hope the Texans know they passed up on passably the Michael Jordan of football.
Also, in today’s draft, Reggie Bush was drafted second overall by the New Orleans Saints, followed by the Tennessee Titans drafting University of Texas star Vince Young. It took longer then expected but eventually, Matt Leinart was selected 10th by the Arizona Cardinals.
In a very questionable pick, the Denver Broncos drafted Jay Cutler even though they already have Jake Plummer who was a M.V.P. canadent last season. Also, USC back LenDale White was taken in the second round by the Titans and will be joined with his opponent from the Rose Bowl, Vince Young. This years draft will be remembered for a long time cause of surprises and questionable picks, but only time can tell.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sportstalk1.blogspot.com/2006/04/bush-whacked-texans-draft-williams.html' title='Bush-Whacked!!! A year after their cross-town foes win the World Series, the Cubs were expected to make a run this season.
However they began the season with their two aces Mark Prior and Kerry Wood being placed on the D.L. Now, the day after a collision at first base with Dodger Rafael Furcal, their new franchise player Derek Lee whom they’ve just signed to a multi-year contract, now has a fractured hand and will be out indefinitely. The team will not speculate on just how long their All-Star First baseman will be out, but he could miss two or three month’s striking a blow into the hearts of the Cubbies.
WELL CUB’S FANS, THERES ALWAYS NEXT YEAR.

Revistiting the Juiced Ball Era?

The baseball season has just started but there are already some staggering facts. The home run total so far this year is up 11% from last season, and the batting averages are up at their highest points since the 1930’s.
Different people are going to have different points, and thoughts. The offensive power this season could be good for the game, cause we all know fans today prefer bat’s over gloves. Or those people who tend to look at things in a negative light could say that baseball is possibly juicing the baseballs by winding the balls tighter for more pop off the bats.
I don’t know what baseball is doing, or isn’t doing, but why is it that when something possibly good, somebody always wants to turn it into a negative. MLB has had a dead ball era, juiced ball and steroid era. Now, that steroids are “out” of the game, all sign would have to point to juicing the ball. If they are doing this, the only people who should be concerned are the pitchers. But I’m sure even they will figure out a scheme to get by the possible juiced balls.

Cheney Booed at Nat's Home Opener

Tuesday, Vice President, Dick Cheney was booed very loudly when throwing the ceremonial first pitch for the Washington Nationals. The Patriots were led by their Senior Forward Jai Lewis who racked up 22 points.
The other teams who have punched their tickets to Indianapolis were Florida, U.C.L.A., and the Bayou Bengal’s from L.S.U. who upset Duke and Texas on their way to there first final four since 1986, when they themselves, just like George Mason was the 11th seed.

Adios! The U.S. pitching was good, but the hitting was horrendous as it was during the entire W.B.C. All night long, the Mexican pitching was dominant allowing only 3 hits for 1 run for the Americans, and their hitting was just enough.
The loss doesn’t completely surprise me, but what I’m upset about is the lack of passion and EFFORT the Americans had. While watching the Dominicans, Cubans, and basically every other country’s team play, you could tell they wanted to be there. The U.S. players acted as though they were in spring training and not representing their country. Also, I noticed, when the U.S. would hit the ball to the shortstop or the third baseman, they just did a light jog down the 1st base line and would come up just short of being safe many times. If the players would just do what they were taught since they were in little league, it would of resulted in more hits and possibly more runs. If there is one thing we’ve learned, we are no longer the best at our own national pastime, and the players should be ashamed and embarrassed of their performance in the WBC.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sportstalk1.blogspot.com/2006/03/adios-mexico-eliminates-us_114256851682406716.html' title='Adios! The United States powered their way to a 17-0 win over South Africa sending them to the next round of the World Baseball Classic. Honestly, South Africa had no chance to win this game. Their roster was basically high school students. How could they hit against arguably the greatest pitcher of all time, Roger Clemens and stop a roster with guys like Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, and Alex Rodriguez? They couldn’t, allowing the U.S. to win easily, putting the mercy rule in effect. Next, the U.S. will take on Mexico, Korea, and Japan.

Bonds Accused: Again!

Its now been reported that there will be a book released giving out specific records with Barry Bonds being linked to steroid use. This is nothing new, this man has heard nothing but people doubting him throughout these past few seasons. Lets face it, the media does this because of his personality. He’s not one to be “friendly,” so therefore the media feels as though they should tarnish the image of a legend. I know my opinion isn’t “politically correct,” or the same as most Americans, but I’ve just about had enough.
All year long, when I hear the words Barry Bonds. All I hear is people criticizing him and boo’s. Yet every year when he is healthy. This man seems to be in the All-Star Game. A game in which FANS vote for who play’s in it. It seems to me as though Americans have no idea what they want. We cant seem to decide what we like or dislike. If your going to accuse, accuse, accuse, then boo somebody because you think they’ve done this and that. Then why are you voting him in the All-Star Game every year?
I still hold the idea in my head that Bonds has not used steroids because nothing has been proven. I’m using the state of mind that would have a person, innocent until proven guilty.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Bonds did use steroids, but I am willing, unlike most Americans, to look on the other side. Personally, I root for Barry Bonds. I hope he breaks Hank Aarons record of 755 Home Runs, and so does America. People say they don’t want him to break the record. But everybody knows, deep down, they do want to see this man break baseballs most cherished record. But, nobody is willing to admit it because of what they will hear back from others.
Until Bonds is proven to have used steroids. I don’t care what the media has to say, and I will CONTINUE to enjoy watching this one of a kind talent, whom we will not be able to see play to much longer. The fans should do the same, and shut their mouths when they have no idea what’s going on. They need to look at everything in another point of view, not just the media which portrays Barry Bonds to be a “Steroid using, over egotistical bastard.”

U.S. Gets Things Started with a Victory

We’ve now completely began the World Baseball Classic, and so far, its been everything it was hyped up to be. This event is great for several reasons. It can unite the baseball world, and it can allow people to see the passion that other countries. As I was sitting down today, and watching the Dominican Republic beat Venezuela 11-5, I found it very interesting seeing how the Latino fan base behaves during their baseball games. When you see Americans at games, their fairly composed. But a Latino crowd is much more loud and their entertaining to watch. I saw them doing everything from yelling chants in unison to dancing on the Dugouts, which you could never do in the U.S. It should be interesting to see what happens when a Latino crowd meets with an American crowd.

Today, the Dominicans beat Venezuela 11-5, Puerto Rico defeated Panama 2-1, Italy shutout Australia to a 10-0 win, and the U.S. didn’t have much offence today, but they didn’t need it, edging Mexico 2-0 in a pitchers duel. Cubs 1B Derek Lee and Braves 3B Chipper Jones each hit a homer get the stars and stripes off on the right foot.

Gametime Hunger?

Last night, Spurs forward Robert Horry bit the arm of a Mavericks guard Jerry Stackhouse during a scuffle. The bite wasnt anything like Mike Tyson’s, but why exactly would you want to try to take a bite out of a sweaty arm? I dont know, maybe he was hungry. After the Mavericks loss, Stackhouse later complained stating, "This game was about Dick Bavetta," he said, according to The Morning News. "He called a double technical foul like he's trying to sort it out. But he never saw what happened. If he'd seen what had happened, he'd know I got an offensive rebound and Horry came down and gave me a cheap shot at the other end." Both teams are 45-12, and are fighting for the top seed in the Western Conference, so the 98-89 loss didn’t set well with the Mavericks organization.

Disappointment?

To most countries, an Olympics like the U.S. has had would be great. But in the heads of Americans all over, this has been a disappointing Olympics. Yes, the U.S. has 23 medals, but this isn’t good enough. We American’s, while competing in sports especially internationally, expect nothing but to finish in 1st place. Maybe it’s an “American Ignorance,” but this ignorance has come from a tradition of winning, whether it’s the Olympics or War, the U.S. always wins and we’ve just become used to it expecting nothing short of victory.
Going into the 2006 Torino Olympic games, the media was proclaiming this to be the best American team ever in the Winter games. But all the hype has proven to just be nothing but. With such names as Bode Miller who brought so much attention, has shown to be nothing but a disappointment in himself along with the skiing team itself. Also, Chad Hedrick, the “Loud Mouth Texan,” as his competitors call him now, told the media his desire to come away with 5 gold medals, only to finish with a Gold in the 5,000 m, a silver in the 10,000 m, and a bronze 1,500m in Men’s Speed skating. What he didn’t expect was to be ridiculed by the media for expressing his disgust with teammate Shani Davis who backed out of the Team Pursuit relay where the U.S. would finish 6th, so he could compete in the men’s 1,000m race. Davis would later earn the gold, becoming the first African-American man to claim an individual gold in the Winter Olympics.
The argument could be made both ways about the games this year. Yes, the U.S. will finish in second in medal stands behind Germany, and they’ve earned the most medals ever in the Winter Olympics when on another country’s soil. But, there hasn’t been a defining performance that stands apart from the rest. In my opinion, this was a big disappointment, and just like basketball, its looking like the world has caught up to American competition.

Dunk Contest Officialy Back

In years past, the Slam Dunk Contest was in itself, bigger than the All-Star Game. With guys like Spud Webb, Dr. J, “the human highlight film,” Dominique Wilkins, and of course, Michael Jordan. The competition featured the high fly excitement that people loved to see. Then for a time, the contest just kind of fluttered off, and the uniqueness and flair to this thrilling event had dissipated.
Then last year in Denver, the competition had its resurgence with the dynamic competition between Amare Stoudemire and the eventual winner Josh Smith. Stoudemire with teammate Steve Nash had a series of tremendous dunks, such as the head-butt ally oop, and the soccer ball kick from Nash to Stoudemire for the ally oop. But it wasn’t enough as Atlanta’s Josh Smith would ware a Dominique Wilkins jersey and had a spectacular dunk to honor the legend.
This year, Knicks PG Nate Robinson took home the trophy after the 5’8’’ Guard leaped over Spud Webb for the dunk. After the past two Slam-Dunk Contest’s, its official. The Dunk Contest has come back!

Sosa Likely to Retire

Sammy Sosa has declined the Washington Nationals 1 year un-guaranteed $500K contract and thus is likely to officially retire in the coming days. Sosa, who is 12 home runs shy of 600 said “[He] will not embarrass [himself],” to reach the milestone.
Now talks begin whether Sosa is a first ballot Hall of Famer. He’s felt some of the greatest highs, and some of the lowest lows in baseball, especially his last few seasons. He is the only man in M.L.B. history to hit 60+ Homeruns in 3 consecutive seasons, including the magical `98 season in the chase for Roger Marris’s 61 with Mark McGwire, he would later end with 66 HR’s.
Then, June 4th, 2003 he was caught in Tampa Bay using a corked bat. This would mark the begging of the end of Sammy Sosa. Later as new drug policy’s came about, Sosa seemed to shrink considerably, creating more talk about steroids.
Personally, I don’t think he’s a first ballot HOF because of what’s happened, but he should be in after a couple tries.

"The Bus" Stops on Championship Lane

On Sunday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers captured their 5th Super Bowl Championship defeating the Seattle Seahawks 21-10 becoming only the third franchise in the N.F.L. History (Dallas and San Fransisco) to have a ring for every finger on one hand. This also makes the Marouny family one of the most dominant family run organizations in sports today.
Even though Pittsburgh had more turnovers and Seattle held the upper end of nearly every statistical comparison, Pittsburgh was able to come away with the win. All night long Seattle was able to complete pass’s and run the ball, but not when they needed to the most.
The most talked about subject of the game was the officiating. The refs did make some questionable calls, most seemed against to be against Seattle. But, the refs didn’t cause you kicker to miss two crucial field goals or your poor clock management at the end of the 1st half and the game. So the Seahawks and their fans need to shut it finally. Then you have the controversial TD with Ben Roethlisberger trying to stretch his 6’5’’ frame over the goal line. You can’t tell if he did get in or not so of course the refs will give it to him. Seattle needs to quit bitching over “blown calls” and just admit they were beat by the better team.
On a good note, Jerome Bettis returned home to Detroit to play his final football game of his illustrious 13 year career. This is one of those few guys who really deserves to have a ring. These past couple of season’s, he’s realized he is no longer the best back on the team and took a seat back so the team could be better off. He never had any off the field issues unlike many players these days and did anything he had to do to win. Now, he walks away from the game with that ring proudly on his finger which he says he’ll ware quite often.

Chill Out!

Texas A&M is complaining and is very upset right now with the current N.FC. While Seattle has been using the phrase since the 80’s.
I know Texas A&M has rights to the phrase, but they need to calm down. Of course they would notice when Seattle has success. Bryant, had 28 points in the fourth quarter alone and held 55 points at the half. No matter what Toronto threw at him, Bryant had an answer for it. Also worth noting, last nights performance put him at number two all-time for points scored in a game, just behind Wilt Chamberlain whom scored 100 points March 2nd, 1962.
This is something I never thought I would see, somebody scoring 40, great game, 50 terrific game, 60 outstanding game, 70 amazing, but 80+ points in this day and age is a feat that will not be matched anytime soon. Well, don’t tell Kobe Bryant that. This is something Michael Jordan didn’t even do, and now Kobe can start hearing those whispers comparing his greatness to M.J. But, I would say he’s there yet.
One thing I’m wondering is where was the defense? I know he was playing the Raptors, who doesn’t have exactly the best defense, but when a guy is pounding you time after time, PUT HIM ON HIS BACK! If I’m a coach, I’m telling my players to do exactly that, if I’m a player, I’m doing that. At what point does your integrity come in as a factor? Your getting paid millions just so you can go out and watch a guy to score time after time? I’d hate to be a Raptors fan, because their going to be talking about this game for age’s.

Showdown in Mo` Town

Coming back home is the ultimate steeler, Jerome Bettis. Bettis, whom in his 13th season will make his first Super Bowl appearance in his Hall of Fame career, and how fitting is it that it's in his hometown which will probably be his final game.
In the game today, Pittsburgh was led by their young QB Ben Rothlisberger who threw for 275 yards and 2 TD’s, and did the the complete opposite of last years A.F.C. Championship game, throwing zero interceptions. Also, on the other side of the ball, Pittsburgh’s defense played outstanding, frustrating the Denver offense.

In the N.F.C. Championship game, the big story was their electrifying WR Steve Smith getting shut down all game long on offense. They were able to hold him to 5 catch’s for 33 yards. He did have a great punt return for a TD, but for the most part he wasn’t a factor in the game. It wasn’t all his fault though, maybe it was the great defense of Seattle or maybe it was the terrible play of Jake Delhomme, who threw for 196 yards, 1 TD and 3 interceptions. Seattle’s Matt Hasselback did what he had to do to advance throwing for 219 yards and 2 TD’s. Also helping out was the M.V.P. Shaun Alexander who rushed for 132 yards and 2 TD’s. The win sends Seattle to their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

SUPER BOWL XL
February 5th, 2006
Pittsburgh Steelers VS Seattle Seahawks
CBS

Davis Suspended for Entering the Stands During Game

Antonio Davis was suspended for 5 games because he went in the stands last night. This however is nothing like the brawl at The Palace in Detroit. Davis, 50 ft. away noticed that his wife was getting in a minor altercation with a Chicago Bulls fan, then ran up into the stands to defend his wife, when getting there he remained calm and nothing broke out. The fan said, Davis’s wife was attacking him and that he will sew for $1 million. His wife say’s the fan was telling her to “Sit down and shut up,” repeatedly.
Davis probably would have been suspended for more games if he didn’t present his case to the league so good. All he was doing was defending his wife, showing concern. I guarantee anybody would do the same thing. Also, N.B.A. Commissioner David Stern said he would of done the exact same thing as Davis. In my opinion he was suspended only because of the Brawl in Detroit a little more than a year ago.

Young Declare's for Draft

After his fabulous performance in the Rose Bowl in the win over USC. Matt Leinart wasn’t the same that we’ve been used to seeing for the past 3 seasons. He never got into sync and got rocked when taking a hard hit to the head. But, the biggest surprise was the '05 Heisman winner, Reggie Bush, who only rushed for 82 yards and 1 TD. Then, he made a crucial mistake that would haunt him all night long. Bush, early in the second quarter, after making a terrific play, tried to lateral the ball to his teammate who wasn’t expecting the ball causing a fumble and the loose ball would to go to Texas.
Late in the 4th quarter with 6:42 left, down by 12 points, Texas started their run after a Trojan touchdown. Vince Young stayed calm and had a look of ease in his eyes. Young nearly fell in the backfield, but caught his balance and ran in for a Texas touchdown cutting into the Trojan lead to 38-33. Following this, the Texas defense stepped up big, holding White, who had a stellar game, from converting 4th and 2 to close out the game. The turnover gave the Longhorns a ray of hope. Young did the same exact thing that he did against Michigan just a year earlier. He drove Texas down the field, passing and running, doing what ever he had to do to get the win. Then, on 4th and 5, when taking it to the air failed, it was time for Texas to unleash its most dangerous weapon, Vince Young's legs. With 26 seconds left, Young looked through each receiver and saw nobody open and took off running. A couple of jukes and 8 yards later, he found himself in the endzone. Then to prevent a winning Trojan field goal, Mack Brown called on Young to run the ball in for a 2 point conversion that was successful to give Texas a 41-38 lead. After a great Reggie Bush catch and run, with 8 seconds left, the Texas defense put enough pressure on Matt Leinart to cause him to throw the ball away, but before the ball could get there, the clock had expired giving the University of Texas Longhorns their 4th National Title, and 1st in 35 years.
Vince Young became only the 4th person in Rose Bowl history to earn the Rose Bowl's Offensive Player of the Game honor two times. Lastly, adding to all the great things for Texas, nobody has to hear talk about how their Head Coach, Mack Brown, can't win "the big ones" because he just did and will be expecting many more in the future.

As Sweet as Sugar

Last night in the Nokia Sugar Bowl, the West Virginia Mountaineers shocked many in the 38-35 defeat of the #7 Georgia Bulldogs in the Georgia Dome. Even though Georgia had a big home field advantage, the Mountaineers came out on fire to jump to a quick 28-0 lead silencing the Georgia crowd. West Virginia was led by their cool, calm, young Freshman QB Pat White who did everything he could to get the victory. Also helping the Mountaineers was another fiery freshman, Steve Slaton, who rushed for 204 yards and 3 touchdowns, including two 52 yard sprints right through the heart of the Bulldog defense.
The game, however, wasn’t all West Virginia, Georgia steadily came back, cutting the lead to 10 at the half. D.J. Shockley settled down and threw for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns. But, fumbling 3 times killed the Bulldogs because West Virginia took advantage of the turnovers and turned them into 2 touchdowns.
Late in the fourth quarter, Georgia had one last opportunity to win, or at least they thought before West Virginia punter, Phil Brady, faked out the entire Bulldog return team and took off to get the first down, allowing the Mountaineers to run the clock out and give West Virginia their first ever BCS win.

Buckeye's Have Fiesta with Irish

Today, in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State was able to overcome a late Notre Dame surge because the Irish weren’t able enough to hold Troy Smith and the Buckeye offense, lifting Ohio State to a 34-20 victory. All game long Ohio State just seemed to gradually dominate more and more, and in the 4th quarter when the Buckeyes needed the big plays, they delivered.
A topic that surrounded this game was a strange situation that engulfed a quarterback, his sister and a linebacker. Notre Dame's quarterback Brady Quinn’s sister, Laura Quinn, is dating the bruising Buckeye linebacker A.J. Hawk. By the end of the game Laura’s boyfriend sacked her younger brother 2 times. But in the end of this family triangle, both sides agreed what happened on the field won't have anything to do with the future and that it's all part of the game.
Notre Dame finished better than they could of ever imagined this season at 9-3 and Ohio State closes out the year 10-2 losing only to Texas and Penn State, two football powerhouses this year. The Texans who are awarded the number 1 pick lost their season finale against the San Francisco 49’ers 20-17. All it took for Houston was doing what they had done all season long, CHOKE!!! All year they could never win the close games. But, this might not be so bad for them, because their reward for losing over and over is a running back from USC, Reggie Bush. Bush, who hasn’t declared himself eligible for the draft still has one more game for the National Championship before he’ll make the announcement. But, chances are he’s headed to Houston. One thing ending in Houston is the Dom Capers era. Capers whom in his 4 seasons with the Texans went 4-12, 5-11, 7-9, 2-14. And clearly his time has run out.

Bad Ref's in Bad Times

Last Wednesday in the Alamo Bowl between Nebraska and Michigan, the ending was great, however the officiating during the game was not. The refs from the Sun Belt Conference were terrible throughout the game for both teams, but mainly against Michigan. They reviewed and got a fumble wrong which Nebraska later got a touchdown off of, and reviewed the “fumble” from Michigan QB Chad Hennie only to get that wrong with Hennie’s arm clearly moving forward in a throwing motion. Yes, that’s 14 points right there off of the wrong calls. Also, there wasn’t a flag when a Cornhusker had his arm around Michigan’s WR Mario Manningham on 4th down.
There are many problems I have. One of which is that there should not be minor conference referees officiating a Big XII vs Big Ten game. There should be refs from major conferences such as the ACC, SEC, BIG EAST, or the PAC 10. We will never know the final outcome of this game because of the poor officiating. But, because of the two blown calls the final was Nebraska winning 32-28, if there are decent officials in the game it looks as though it would probably being Michigan winning 28-18.

Texas VS USC

Again, for the 3rd strait year, the Big XII will be represented in the National Championship game, only this year, it’s the Texas Longhorns, who will try to do what their bitter rival Oklahoma couldn’t do in two tries. But in doing so, they have a daunting task in front of them as they will face 2 time defending champions, the Trojans of USC who hasn’t lost a game in over 2 years.
Last seasons Heisman trophy winner Matt Leinart exploded in College Footballs biggest game of the year, leading his team to blast past Oklahoma. But this is another year and another Heisman winner for USC. The biggest question could be, how will Reggie Bush play in the biggest game of his life? If he performs anything like he had during the season, there is no doubt the Trojans will be set for their 3rd strait title.
Another person to keep your eye on is Vince Young whom finished 2nd to Bush in the Heisman race. All year, Young preformed when his longhorns needed him most. Early in the season when UT went into “The Shoe” to play Ohio State, he helped lead his team to a 25-22 victory over the Buckeyes. Then when the game, and season seemed like it was lost VS Oklahoma State, facing a 19 point defecate at halftime, Young cam out and led a mounting comeback to blowout the Cowboys in Stillwater.
The biggest test for the game goes to UT. They’ll have figure out wither they choose to stop Reggie Bush or his counterpart matt Leinart. Either one could beat you, and all it could be is just a coin flip decision to determine who they want to stop. If your UT you hope you stop one guy and the other has a bad game. But! That hasn’t happened in over 2 years, so UT fans, don’t count on it. For USC their strategy is to contain Vince Young. Don’t let him get comfortable, but they want him running all over their defense. They want Young to beat them with his arm, not his feet.
Ok, now living in Texas this will not exactly make me the friends of a lot of people, so UT fans, turn away or be prepared. I don’t think USC will blowout UT, like they did to OU last season, it will be a close game to the final minutes. But, I believe that USC has to many weapons and they WILL go home with their 3rd strait title.

USC over Texas 38-31
Player of the Game: Matt Leinart

DAMoN YANKEES!

Amazingly, the face of the Boston Red Sox, Johnny Damon signed a 4 year/ 52 million dollar contract with the evil empire, the New York Yankees. USC running back Reggie Bush capped off a sensational regular season by winning the 2005 Heisman Memorial Trophy. After seeing what Bush did all season long, it shouldn’t come to any surprise that he was the winner of the most coveted award in College Football.
Bush all season long helped his Trojans get passed their close games, and when they needed him, he never shied away. In the Notre Dame game he dominated, also being unselfish when asking fellow Trojan Matt Leinart, “You gonna go for it?” and Leinart replying “You think I should?” Bush said “Go for it.” That they did, instead of spiking the ball to kick a field goal to send the game to overtime, he helped Leinart into the endzone for the go ahead touchdown now known as “The Bush Push.” Later on in the season, when Fresno State threatened the Trojans winning streak, Bush did everything he possibly could to lead USC the victory with 513 all-purpose yards.
What makes Reggie Bush different then the past decade or so of Heisman winners. Everything, his attitude, his work ethic, and that extra spark to bring new life to the game. Kids now, who watch college football wont be saying their somebody like Emmit Smith, Walter Payton, Jim Brown, the will now say Reggie Bush. Awaiting for him now is the N.F.L. If indeed he does chose to enter the draft, he will give the league more publicity for a rookie than they have seen in years. I’m not saying Bush will be the N.F.L’s all-time rusher, but he will be among some of the all time greats if he keeps up what he’s been doing to get this far.

Drug Test During Game's?

Last night, in Seattle, Sonics starting SF Reggie Evens didn’t come to start the 2nd half. Why, because the N.B.A. as part of their random drug testing program, tested Evens during halftime causing a delay for him to return to the game. The N.B.A. has said that the program isn’t supposed to give players the testing during games and it wont happen again. The Sonics later went on to lose the game 104-101 to the New York Knicks.
I don’t have a problem with the N.B.A. drug testing, but doing this during a game is absurd. I understand it was a mistake, but how can you possibly make a mistake like that. The people who schedule the tests cannot honestly say that they didn’t see anything unusual come up. Also, I’m not sure, but wouldn’t the team have prior knowledge a couple hours or days, and why wouldn’t they do anything? A lot of people messed up last night, and I’m sure it won’t happen again.

Hook `Em Horns!

Today after the 40-29 win over their in-state rival Texas A&M, its starting to shape up as a Texas VS USC showdown in the Rose Bowl. But, today’s game did not come easily for the Longhorns. A&M played tough all game long and the final score does not show the final outcome. The Aggie’s were led by a redshirt Freshman QB Stephen McGee who was filling the shoes for the injerd Reggie McNeil. The freshman ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns in his first start. UT's defense seemed to struggle, but before it was done, the Longhorns figured everything out and found a way to stop the offence. Vince Young only threw for 161 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT, also Young’s great legs only got him 19 yards. This performance may have damaged his Heisman hopes but he still has one more chance in the Big XII Championship game to show what he has for the voters. Ramonce Taylor did come to play and pulled the slack with Young struggling and ran for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Texas VS Colorado
Big XII Championship Game
December 3rd NOON on ABC
Reliant Stadium

Worst Sports Announcer

If you want to hear the worlds worst "Sports Announcer", its not hard, just watch N.B.A. games on ESPN. I've noticed that Bill Walton has never announced a Houston Rockets game unbiased. Everytime I listen to him, he is constitly harping on the Rockets and giving praise to the other team. Last season they were winning by 15 points during a game late in the 4th quarter, and there again Walton was critisizeing Jeff Van Gundy's style of coaching and saying Houston wasnt working together. Just for grins, during tonights game between the Rockets and Suns I kept count during an 8 minute span in the 3rd quarter, I was counting the number of times Walton critisized and praised Houston. Now remember, a Sports Announcer is supposed to be unbiased and equal with both teams. Here are the numbers.

Complements: 2

Critisizing/Insults: 31

EQUAL HUH?

Close Call

Fresno State gave USC a run for their money, but in the end the Trojans were just to much for the Bulldogs with a 50-42 win. This marks USC's 33rd strait victory. But you cant undermine what Fresno State did, the went head to head with the nations best team and took it to the last minute. They shouldn't be disappointed with what they came away with. Reggie Bush, despite costing a TD for Fresno with a fumble on a KR, was spectacular rushing for 292 yards, 3 catch's for 68 yards, 16 punt return yards, and 135 kick return yards breaking a Pac-10 record for 511 all-purpose yards. The fans are treated to the Iron bowl between Auburn and Alabama, Michigan VS Ohio State, then, the oldest rivalry, Harvard VS Yale.

But there were some other games. First, Penn State clinched the Big Ten Championship with a win over Michigan St., giving the Ninety Lions there first BCS game since the BCS came into existence. Also, in the major upset, Georgia Tech upset #3 Miami (FL) 14-10.

Now, the rivalry games, Ohio St. went into Michigan and came back to win 25-21 with OSU QB Troy Smith leading the Buckeyes down the field for the victory. Then, down in Alabama, Auburn defeated `bama easily with a 28-18 victory, and in a classic, Harvard defeated Yale in triple overtime 30-25, giving the Crimson there 5th strait victory over Yale.

To end on a good note, Kansas State earned a victory over Missouri 36-28 giving their Head Coach Bill Snyder a victory for his final game as a Coach. For those fans who don’t know what Snyder has done, he completely turned the K-State Football program around. When he came to K-State, they were the worst team in College Football history with only 637 wins in their entire history and 1 bowl birth. When Snyder finished, he had 636 wins and 11 consecutive bowl births, and in the 90's K-State was one of the elite teams. Also worth noting, Coach Snyder never had one of the top recruiting class's.

Whats Next?

Lately, when you hear something about the N.F.L. it seems all you hear about is Terrell Owens and the Philadelphia Eagles. Earlier this week, T.O. was told he was going to be suspended for 4 games then after that, would not return for the rest of the season for reasons detrimental to the team.

The Eagles management finally decided to do this after all the incidents T.O. has put them into. But it all began 2 weeks after the Super Bowl loss to the Patriots. Owens said Philadelphia’s star QB Donovan McNabb just got tired and was throwing up in the huddle, and stating that’s the reason why Philly lost. Then, Owens stated that he would not come to mini camp unless the Eagles paid the money he thought he was due. Later he would report to camp even though he never did get his new contract. Then before you knew it T.O. was sent home after getting in a dispute with head coach Andy Reid.

This is where the saga that is T.O. does not end, a couple weeks ago after Owens caught his 100th career TD, he claimed that the Eagles organization was un-classy for not celebrating “his” milestone. Soon after when you thought this was it, Owens was reported to getting into a fistfight with teammate Hugh Douglas in the wait room, then challenging the entire team. Soon after he was suspended.

Now the N.F.L.P.A. (National Football League Players Association) has said they want the Eagles to cut Owens so he has a chance to get with another team. This is the problem I have with the N.F.L.P.A., what is the point of suspending this selfish moron when your just going to give him a job elsewhere. With most people, in the real world, when they are suspended there not just given another job right away. Terrell Owens needs to quit acting like a child and grow up, but I can guarantee you this is not the last of what we will hear of “The Terrell Owens Soap Opera.”

A.F.C. Just 2 years later, the Red Sox won there first World Series in 84 years. Epstein, reportingly signed a contract this morning, but this information was false, in the afternoon, just hours away from his contract expireing, Theo stepped down. He didn't get the money he wanted, but that wasn't the issue. The White Sox fans will never have to hear these words ever again after last nights World Series sweep over the Houston Astros. This series was different for them then their other two series against the Red Sox and Angels. In this series every game was close, but they did something that the Astros didn't, they executed when they had oppurtunities.

Also, I'll admit it, I was wrong about the Astros winning in six. But Chicago just executed on everything when they had to. But for the true fans of the game, you can appreciate how they played. Each player knew his part and never made a scene. They had no big ego's and no real big "Superstar" players proving that money doesn't buy you championships.

But all is not lost for the Astros, they still have a real young team and they now know what they have to do. I'm confident they will pick up another bat over the off-season. To add to that, as a huge fan of the Astros, I am still very proud of the season they had.

This is the White Sox's first World Series title since 1917. As a fan of the Astro’s, I am ecstatic!

But there are some things bothering me. No, not the team but the media and how underrated Houston is. First the media questioned whether the Astros could score enough runs to beat the Braves, then they said the same thing when Houston went against the Cards. Now look where the Astro’s are now, and of course once again, the media is saying the ‘stros cant keep up with the White Sox because our bats are not big enough and the pitching isn’t as good, even though all season long ESPN, FOX SPORTS NET, ETC. has said we have the best pitching in the Majors, now they turn their backs. Oh yeah, one more thing, the media also said that the Astro’s couldn’t go anywhere because of the loses of Jeff Kent(Dodgers) and Carlos Beltran(Mets).

Well, hmmmmm, where are the Astro’s and where are Kent and Beltran?

My Prediction:
2005 World Series Champions
Houston Astro’s in 6 games

By the way, my prediction history:

Last 4 Super Bowl Winners (Before the season)
Marlins and Red Sox World Series Winners (before playoffs began that year)
Vermont over Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament
The last 3 Kentucky Derby Winners
This year: Astro’s over Braves in 4
Astro’s over Cardinals in 6

I THINK YOU GET MY POINT!!!

Replay in Baseball?

After last nights controversial play with Angels catcher Josh Paul jogging back to the dugout and throwing the ball out to the mound thinking the inning was over, but instead, White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski started running to 1st base started the debate of replay in America's Pastime. Later, Piersynski would score on a double to give the White Sox the 2-1 victory.

But still, the debate is should there be replay in Major League Baseball. I viewed both sides of this heated discusion but in my own opinion, I say no. There should not be instant replay, baseball is the only sport that shouldn't, they need to keep the game like our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers left it for us. But on the other side, with playoff games, they shouldn't be decided on what I call a "oops play" meaning, the umpire messed up, or people just dont know who to blame. Early in the game Brandon Backe gave up a Grand Slam to Braves first baseman. After that, in the 5th inning Andrew Jones hit a sac fly to go up 5-0. That same inning, Astros OF Orlando Pamleiro hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-1 game. Then in the 8th Braves Catcher Brian McCann belted a ball to right field to put up Atlanta 6-1, and it looked like the series was headed back to Atlanta.

Then the Astros started a roaring comeback. With bases loaded, Lance Berkman hit a Grand Slam of his own into the Crawford Box's making the game 6-5. In the ninth, Atlanta got 2 quick outs, then with the Astros down to their final out. Brad Ausmus hit the ball to Left Center field, and the ball hit the yellow line, to tie this classic up at 6. Later in the 16th inning Roger Clemens came to relief pitch, the first time in his career since 1984. The most players ever used in a playoff game, and the first post-season game with 2 Grand Slams. O.U. throughout the game could never get anything going on offence or defence, Sooners QB Rhett Bomar completed 12 of 33 pass's for only 92 yards. Adrian Peterson was inaffective carrying the ball 3 times for 10 yards. On the other sideline. Texas QB Vince Young was in fact in"VINCE"able passing for 241 yards and 3 TD's and rushing for 45 yards leading is team to a HUGE VICTORY. Early in the game, both team were sloppy with the football, but Texas would figure everything out and they never looked back. Its clearly looking like there will be a USC VS Texas showdown in the Rose Bowl this year as the Longhorns play Colorado, Texas Tech (who could pose "some" trouble), Oklahoma St., Baylor, Kansas, and Texas A&M.

White Sox Sweep through Boston

There will be a new World Series Champion this year, as the Chicago White Sox swept the Red Sox. Later, with 31 seconds remaining in the game, Wolverines kicker Garrett Rivas missed an easy 26 yard field goal. Then going to overtime M.S.U. had the ball first, and didnt take advantage of there first possession with there kicker, John Goss missing a 38 yard field goal. Following that, the Wolverines retained possession of the ball, needing only a field goal to win, and they did just that. This is the first time in 7 years that the Wolverines have not been ranked. The drop comes after getting beat by Winconsin, after Badgers QB John Stocco ran the ball through the heart of Michigans D, and into the endzone with 23 seconds left in the game. Next, unranked Michigan is traveling to East Lansing to face #11 Michigan State, I'll be watching to see if the Wolverines will come out more intence, or still have the hangover from the Wisconsin game. I think the Red Sox will still win the divison when it is all said and done, but their making a race out of it with the Yank's, its looking like it will come down to the 3 game series to close the regular season in Boston.
September 30th 7:05 pm*: On Local Networks
October 1st 1:20 pm*: On Fox
October 2nd 2:05 pm*: On Local Networks
*Eastern Standard Time and Networks Maybe Subject to Change

Home Away From Home

On Wednesday the N.B.A. announced that due to Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Hornets will play 35 home games in Oklahoma City and 6 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Hornets will be playing there home games on the road this year because of the extensive water damage at New Orleans Arena, and it will reportedly take months to fix. While playing in Oklahoma City the Hornets Jersey will say “Hornets”, and on the road it will still say “New Orleans,” but there will be a patch on the shoulder recognizing Oklahoma City. In the standings they will go down as the New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets, and should they make the playoffs, they will play in the 19,675 seated Ford Center. Also, the Hornets have the option to stay next year if they chose to do so. So, good luck Hornets player, coaches, trainers, etc. Your going to need it, it’s going to be a long upcoming season.

Peterson: Will Play

Even though Oklahoma R.B. Rice who was cut from the Seahawks and signed the Denver Broncos during the off-season was hoping to become the teams 3rd Receiver, knowing that he wouldn’t now, Rice chose to retire from the game he loves. Not only is Rice thought of the games all-time best receiver, he can also be considered the greatest ever. He holds 38 N.F.L. records including, most yards and touchdowns. This is the kind of Receiver that everyone should be like, he never "show-boated", was never an "Give me the damn ball type player", because he was smart enough to understand, if he got open his QB will find him. When he did score, he just gave the ball to the ref and went to the sideline and acted like he had been there before, because he has. (207 times) He will be missed in the N.F.L. and hopefully, someone will come around just like him, all though it will be hard to fill number 80's shoes.

Upset Saturday!!!

This afternoon held the first major upset of the new College Football season with the T.C.U. Horned Frogs beating #7 Oklahoma 17-10. Most of the game was going at the speed that T.C.U. wanted. They never let O.U. get a lot of momentum and kept there composure when the Sooners tied it 10-10. This game was the first time Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops has ever lost a game in September, also, the last time O.U. lost there season opener, 1996 to no other than, T.C.U. in a 20-7 loss. The Horned Frogs secondary absolutely shut down O.U. after an off-season of improving 2004’s worst secondary in the N.C.A.A. No doubt this game is the biggest win in the school's 45 football year history. Celebrate T.C.U. fans, because your team may have just completed the biggest upset of the year.

GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!

Once again, to no surprise, the Director of the Tour de France and the people of France, are now alleging that Lance Armstong did use steroids. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not saying the major injury to Cameron is funny. Bet seeing Beltran collide like that, and the sudden panic of the Mets over there $117 million dollar man was great. And you know what, I didn’t feel sorry at all for Beltran after what he did to the Astro’s over the off-season. I did however feel sympathy for Cameron. Every single time you think his ego has finaly died down a little bit, he come's back with some idiotic comments. He last said, "I'm the Yankee's Leader," so that would mean that not Derick Jeter, not A-Rod, but Sheff is. He also said, he would never jump into the stands to catch a ball, like most players should with the salaries they are paid. Then saying that he should be paid more, and has to feed his family, $21 million over 3 years isnt enough? Last I checked, real leaders, guys like Jeter, almost never complain and hussle every single play! Another thing Sheffield said is, "The Yankee's have too much media in the locker room." WELL, NO SHIT!!! ITS THE NEW YORK YANKEE'S, my grandmother who's not really into sports even knows the kind of media the Yanks get! Sheff, you knew what you were doing when you signed on that dotted lined of a YANKEE'S CONTRACT!!! Look, I dont care if you say you deserve more money, but dont say you "Need to feed your family," what I have a problem with, is when an over egotistical ball player says, I'm the leader, not him, him, or him, too much media, blah, blah, blah. One word, ENOUGH!!!

Mr. 3,000-NO, Mr. 10 Games, Yes

Today, August 1st, Rafael Palmeiro was caught failing the new steroid policy by baseball. Palmeiro was quoted to saying, " I was never aware that I had put a illegal substance in my body." Oh please, thats what they all say my friend, I've heard it all, and let me tell you this Rafael, if I was paid the kind of money you are, and I was the franchise player, like you are, I would read every single product that is in the shakes, drinks whatever you use to help your performance. The good thing is that this, (unfortunaly), is GREAT for baseball, it finally proves that the new policy is working.

Mr. 3000!

Tonight, July 15, Rafael Palmeiro became only the 25th person ever to hit for 3,000+ hits in a career, at the same time joining a shorter list. Along with Hank Aaron, Willy Mays, and Eddie Murray, he is now the 4th to have 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. People have said the Palmeiro doesnt deserve to be in the Hall of Fame because he was never the best player in the league or at his position for that matter. But if you look at his numbers closely he has been a consistant hitter and fielder winning a Gold Glove for 3 consecutive seasons( 1997-'99 ). In my opinion, he should be let in, its not his fault there have been some great firstbasemen in his era. So, the writers need to quit making the H.O.F. and popularity contest and start letting those who belong. Now, I dont think he's a first ballot H.O.F., but I think he is good enough to get in his 2nd to 4th year.

All Star Game

This year's M.L.B. All Star game was one of the most boreing ones I've ever seen. 1. The N.L. got just blown out. Yeah, they lost by just two runs, but it was pretty much a 7-2 game. What was Tony La Russa thinking, why would you start Arimis Ramirez over Morgan Ensburg. Ensburg has much better numbers and he's helped his club more than Ramirez. Also, I understand why he started Chris Carpenter, there had to be another pitcher. This was just another year that the National League was dominated by the American League. Detroit, for most of the 7 game series, mainly argued with the refs and were playing not to lose, when you do that, your going down.

Dwane Wade

This kid is just amazing! His first real big game, he gets shut down and is given so much critisizm. Then he comes out in Game 2 versus the league's best D and posts up 40 pts. At Marquette, he could of come out early, and most would of, with a child and a wife, but he stayed in all 4 years. Look where he is now. This is a great example of what college will do to help the N.B.A.

SPORTS TALK

This is for men to talk about sports and nothing but, just your opinion on anything, say what you want.
